Position Purpose

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher is responsible for identifying, planning, delivering, and evaluating specialised educational provision for students with additional learning needs. The SEN Teacher works collaboratively with classroom teachers, parents, therapists, support staff, and school leaders to ensure that students with special educational needs are able to access the curriculum, make meaningful progress, develop independence, and participate fully in school life.

The SEN Teacher provides targeted intervention, individualised support, and specialist teaching strategies while promoting inclusive practices throughout the school. The role requires a commitment to high expectations, safeguarding, student wellbeing, and evidence-based educational practice.

Key Responsibilities

Student Assessment and Identification

• Identify students requiring additional educational support through assessment data, observations, referrals, and consultation with staff and parents.

• Conduct educational assessments to determine students’ strengths, needs, learning profiles, and barriers to achievement.

• Analyse academic, behavioural, social-emotional, and developmental information to inform intervention planning.

• Contribute to multidisciplinary assessments and reviews in collaboration with therapists, psychologists, and external agencies.

• Monitor and evaluate student progress using a range of assessment tools and data sources.

• Maintain accurate records of assessments, interventions, and student outcomes.

Individualised Educational Planning

• Develop, implement, monitor, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and intervention programmes.

• Establish measurable, achievable, and relevant learning goals aligned with curriculum expectations and individual student needs.

• Ensure that educational targets are regularly reviewed and updated based on student progress.

• Support the development of transition plans for students moving between year groups, phases, or educational settings.

• Contribute to annual reviews and other formal student review processes.

Teaching and Intervention

• Deliver high-quality specialised instruction to individual students and small groups across a range of learning needs.

• Adapt teaching methods, resources, assessments, and learning activities to meet diverse student needs.

• Implement evidence-based intervention programmes targeting literacy, numeracy, communication, social skills, executive functioning, and independent learning skills.

• Support students in developing academic, social, emotional, behavioural, and life skills.

• Promote student engagement, confidence, resilience, and independence.

• Use ongoing assessment data to inform teaching and intervention planning.

• Monitor student progress and adjust teaching approaches as required.

Inclusive Education and Classroom Support

• Support classroom teachers in implementing inclusive teaching practices and differentiated instruction.

• Collaborate with teachers to adapt curriculum content, learning activities, assessments, and classroom environments.

• Provide guidance regarding accommodations, modifications, and accessibility measures.

• Model effective teaching strategies and interventions within classroom settings.

• Promote inclusive educational practices.

• Assist in creating supportive learning environments that enable students to access the curriculum effectively.

Behaviour, Social and Emotional Development

• Support students’ social, emotional, behavioural, and self-regulation development.

• Implement positive behaviour support strategies and intervention plans.

• Assist students in developing social communication, self-advocacy, organisational, and independent learning skills.

• Contribute to the development of positive learning behaviours and emotional wellbeing.

• Work collaboratively with pastoral and wellbeing teams to address barriers to learning.

Collaboration and Communication

• Work closely with parents, teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, psychologists, school leaders, and external agencies to support student outcomes.

• Attend and contribute to IEP meetings, annual reviews, case conferences, parent 

• meetings, and multidisciplinary team discussions.

• Maintain regular communication with families regarding student progress, goals, and support strategies.

• Provide practical recommendations and support strategies for implementation at home and within the classroom.

• Foster positive and professional relationships with all stakeholders.

Shadow Teacher Supervision and Support

• Provide guidance and support to shadow teachers working with students receiving SEN provision.

• Assist in planning and monitoring support programmes delivered by teaching assistants.

• Promote effective deployment of support staff to maximise student independence and learning.

• Contribute to staff training and professional development related to SEN and inclusion.

Documentation and Record Keeping

• Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records of student assessments, interventions, progress, meetings, and communications.

• Prepare reports, review documents, progress summaries, and other documentation required by the school and regulatory authorities.

• Ensure compliance with all school policies and statutory requirements relating to SEN provision.

• Maintain organised systems for managing caseloads, resources, and student information.

Professional Practice

• Demonstrate high standards of professionalism, ethics, and conduct at all times.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding student, family, and staff information.

• Participate in ongoing professional development and remain informed of current research, legislation, and best practice in special education and inclusion.

• Contribute to school improvement initiatives relating to inclusion, accessibility, and student support.

• Support the development and implementation of SEN policies, procedures, and programmes.

• Actively promote a culture of inclusion, diversity, respect, and high expectations.

Safeguarding and Student Welfare

• Safeguard and promote the welfare, wellbeing, and safety of all students.

• Adhere to all child protection, safeguarding, health and safety, and risk management procedures.

• Report safeguarding concerns promptly in accordance with school policy.

• Maintain a safe, supportive, and nurturing learning environment.

• Promote positive relationships, student voice, and emotional wellbeing.

General Responsibilities

• Comply with all school policies, procedures, regulations, and professional standards.

• Participate in school meetings, duties, professional learning activities, and events as required.

• Contribute positively to the wider life of the school.

• Undertake additional duties consistent with the role and professional qualifications as directed by the Head of Inclusion/SENCoordinator, or School Leadership Team.
