Gulf Oil was one of the most renowned global oil companies from the 1900s through the 1980s. It was ranked as the eighth-largest American manufacturing company in 1941and the ninth-largest in 1979. Gulf Oil was one of the famous Seven Sisters oil companies. Before merging with Standard Oil of California, Gulf remained the biggest contributor to the legendary Mellon family fortune. The headquarters of both Gulf and Mellon Financial were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
When Exxon withdrew from the Turnpike in 1990, Gulf became exclusive provider of filling stations at travel plazas beside the Pennsylvania Turnpike. All of the travel plazas still sell Sunoco fuel.
